I began formally studying trumpet with Dr. Frank Hanson at UW-Whitewater where I later attended on scholarship. I auditioned into the lead trumpet position of the jazz orchestra led by Steve Wiest (now directing the UNT One O’clock Lab Band). In 2004, I won the UW-Whitewater Concerto Competition. After 3 years of studying Music Education, I switched my major to Trumpet Performance in order to focus more deeply on my own instrument. I earned my Bachelor of Music Performance from UW-Whitewater.

In 2007, I started freelancing and teaching lessons while studying with David Cooper at UW-Platteville. While in Platteville, I performed with many ensembles – playing with pit orchestras for musicals, brass quintets, jazz bands, wind ensembles, and orchestras including the Dubuque Symphony Orchestra. In 2008, I collaborated with the Quattro Fromaggi Saxophone Quartet and they performed the world premier of my arrangement of Jon Gilardi’s Blast Off the Rocket. I also assisted UW-Platteville Director of Bands Barry Ellis with his sabbatical work as a copyist/editor to premier a piece by the late Clifton Williams. I won an Outstanding Soloist award at the Eau Claire Jazz Festival in 2009.

In fall 2009, I attended Oklahoma City University on a performance assistantship, provided by the Margaret Petree Memorial Scholarship, as a member of the Blackwelder Brass Quintet alongside Ryan Beach. While there, I studied trumpet with Prof. Michael Anderson, jazz with John Allen and Dr. Cory Gavito, and composition with Dr. Kris Maloy. In 2011, as a part of the OCU Trumpet Ensemble I competed at the National Trumpet Competition. I graduated in 2011 from OCU with High Honors.

Currently, I am living back in Madison, WI where I created and directed of the Mendota Brass Quintet and am a member of the Brass Knuckles Quintet and Percussion. I also perform freelance for a variety of ensembles including Neophonic Jazz Orchestra, Madison Brass Band, Orquesta SalSoul, Grupo Candela, Four Seasons Theater, Music Theatre of Madison, Children’s Theater of Madison, etc. I am passionate about teaching musicians of all ages, to expose them to the different musical possibilities and to help them define and achieve their goals.

tl;dr – I’ve been tootin’ around for a little while
